The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has decided on the format the body intends to use to execute the forthcoming 2024-2025 season.
The 20 NPFL clubs, who are expected to participate in the forthcoming campaign, have settled for the full-schedule format for the season.
Recall that in the 2022-2023 season, the board of the league decided to settle for the abridged version of the campaign. This version divided the league into two groups (groups A and B) of ten clubs each.
All the ten clubs played against each other (in a home and away format) and the teams that finished in the top three of each group qualified for the Super 6 which determined the overall winner of the league season, Enyimba.
However, during the 2023-2024 season, the NPFL decided to return to the full-schedule format which placed all the 20 clubs in one group where they had to play against each other in a home and away format.
At the end of the season, Enugu Rangers emerged champions and Remo Stars finished second.
After the end of last season, there were reports that the NPFL would return to the abridged version because of the poor financial state of some of the clubs.
That was subjected to deliberations earlier today, July 16, at the ongoing Annual General Meeting of the league clubs in Lagos.
“I can confidently tell you that the 2024/25 NPFL season will be a full format and not an abridged one,” Rivers United General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu told reporters.
Note that the new season is expected to start on August 31, 2024. The date is said to be subject to change.
