NPFL: Kwara United Sack 22 Players, Recruit 23 Players

Kwara United

Kwara United have sacked 22 players after struggling to finish 13th in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table last season.

Recall that in the 2023-2024 NPFL season, Kwara United recorded 12 wins, 15 draws, and 11 defeats in 38 league games. This performance helped them to finish just five points away from the relegation zone.

To avoid waiting for the last four games of the season before guaranteeing their survival in the league, the Ilorin-based side have decided to boost their squad by sacking and recruiting new players.

In a media chat with reporters in Ilorin on Monday, the General Manager of Kwara United, Bashir Badawiy, revealed that 23 players have been signed to fortify the team ahead of next season, following the sack of 22 players.

The General Manager said they have signed Abayomi Samuel from 3SC, and Jimi Iteji from Plateau United. They also signed Kazeem Badmus, Adamu Abubakar and Ifeanyi Ogba from NPFL champions, Enugu Rangers.

He said: “Our expectation in the 2024/25 NPFL season is to finish among the top three clubs, we don’t want to struggle again; check our records in the last two seasons, we were among the top four and even qualified for continental.”

Meanwhile, 20 NPFL clubs are expected to meet later today, July 16, at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) to discuss the format for the forthcoming season.

The clubs have two options to choose from, the abridged or a full-scheduled format. Recall that the league ran on an abridged version in the 2022-2023 season but returned to the full-scheduled form last season.

The 2024-2025 NPFL season is expected to start on Saturday, August 31.
