Nigeria Premier Football League club, Akwa United have decided to hold an open screening exercise to sign new players ahead of the 2024-2025 NPFL season.
Recall that during the 2023-2024 season, Akwa United struggled to remain in the NPFL and ended up finishing in the 16th spot with 49 points.
The former NPFL champions are trying to avoid the repetition of that by bolstering their squad via an open screening process.
This process is seen as a cheaper way of getting talents across the country without having to pay much to agents and rival clubs.
According to a statement from the club, the screening exercise will commence at the Uyo Township Stadium on Monday, July 15, and end on July 22. It will take place at 8 a.m. daily.
Meanwhile, Sporting Lagos best player of the season, Jonathan Alukwu seems to be seriously pondering about his next destination.
Alukwu joined Sporting last summer, and in his debut NPFL season at the Lagos-based club, he scored 12 goals. However, his efforts couldn’t help the club to remain in the top flight.
Due to his prolific run in the league last season, Nigerian top-flight clubs like El-Kanemi Warriors and Rivers United are said to be interested in him, including yet-to-be-named foreign clubs.
Amid that, the 21-year-old right-winger took to his X page to write: “Please…Where am I really going to please.”
