A prominent member of the Northern Elders Forum, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current state, lamenting that the country is plagued by hunger, insecurity, and incessant bloodshed.
Baba-Ahmed, who recently resigned as a Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.
The former presidential aide noted that Nigerians across board are grappling with immense hardship and deteriorating national security, insisting that no well-meaning citizen could claim satisfaction with the current state of affairs.
“Nobody would tell you that they are entirely happy with the way the country is going. There is too much hunger, insecurity, and bloodshed,” Baba-Ahmed said.
Speaking on his decision to exit the administration, Baba-Ahmed said key members of the Northern Elders Forum were aware of his dissatisfaction with the government’s performance and trajectory, hinting that his resignation came as no surprise to them.
“Some members of the Northern Elders Forum knew about my feelings about the job, about the administration, about the direction this country was going,” he disclosed.
“They knew I was unhappy about many things. So it wasn’t entirely a surprise when I walked around and said I am back.”
Naija News reports that Baba-Ahmed’s resignation has been widely interpreted as a return to his more vocal role within the Northern Elders Forum, an influential sociopolitical group known for its strong critique of governance and policy implementation in Nigeria.
