The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, has appealed to the state workers to call off their strike and resume work.
Naija News reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman in Nasarawa, Ismaila Okoh, led the state workers to strike to press for the implementation of the minimum wage.
According to Okoh, while Governor Sule agreed to pay ₦70,500 minimum wage, there was no agreement on implementation.
“Although the minimum wage committee set up by the state government has agreed to start paying ₦70,500, no document has been signed to that effect up till this moment,” he said on Monday, 2nd December.
Governor Sule, on Thursday, explained that his administration is “committed to ensure that the people of the state including workers are better for it”.
The Governor stated this while inaugurating the remodeled office of the state Deputy Governor, Emmanuel Akabe.
He urged the striking workers to “reconsider their positions and return to their duty posts, as no worker will be victimized over the strike“.
He said that the ₦70,500 he approved as the new minimum wage will take effect from the payment of December salaries, noting that negotiations are at an advanced stage on the consequential adjustment for other categories of workers in the state.
Also speaking, the Speaker of Nasarawa State Assembly, Danlandi Jatoa, said the Assembly appreciates the contributions of the workers in the state and appealed to the state NLC to suspend its ongoing strike for further fruitful negotiations.
“The assembly appreciate also the fact that the state government is ready to pay hence the need for more understanding from the two parties for amicable resolutions to bring the matter to an end once and for all,” the Nation quoted him.
