Nigerian-born striker Chuba Akpom made history for Dutch club Ajax as he became the club’s fourth player to score three or more goals in a European game.
Chuba Akpom joined this exclusive group of Ajax players when he scored a hat-trick in the club’s 4-1 victory over Polish club Jagiellonia Białystok on Thursday night.
Other players who have this record are Mohammed Kudus in 2023, Sébastien Haller in 2021, and Luis Suárez in 2009.
Akpom’s first goal in the UEFA Europa League playoff tie came in the ninth minute after a remarkable solo run, setting the tone for his exceptional performance.
He then scored his second goal just a minute after the hour mark, seizing an opportunity from inside the box. The striker completed his hat-trick nine minutes later from the penalty spot, cementing his place in Ajax’s European history.
Following the remarkable victory, Chuba Akpom told Ajax TV: “It’s amazing. I thank God. I thank my teammates and all the staff for all the support. I had my best match in an Ajax shirt today (Thursday) so I’m happy.
“Scoring is what I thrive on; it’s what I love to do, so when it’s not happening, it gets frustrating but I’m a very positive and persistent person, so I say thank you to the coach for the trust.”
Ajax will have the opportunity to consolidate their lead when they host Jagiellonia in the second leg next week Thursday.
