The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a warning regarding an increase in online scams that involve fraudulent recruitment and auction offers falsely associated with the service.
In light of this, the service has urged the public to stay alert and prevent themselves from becoming victims of these fraudsters.
Naija News reports that the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, made this announcement while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, June 20.
Maiwada voiced his concerns about the rising trend of criminals impersonating high-ranking customs officials on social media to mislead unsuspecting citizens.
He stressed that the NCS does not carry out recruitment or auctions through social media, labelling such activities as “criminal acts intended to damage the service’s reputation and defraud innocent Nigerians.”
“We have observed a disturbing rise in fake accounts bearing the names and images of the Comptroller-General of Customs, the National PRO, and even retired senior officers, all falsely claiming to offer jobs and auction opportunities,” Maiwada said.
As part of ongoing efforts to combat such schemes, he announced that the NCS recently arrested one, Mr. Okoli Okana Boniface, for allegedly manipulating the recruitment process while falsely claiming to be an aide to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Maiwada added: “The case was promptly reported and thoroughly investigated by the Customs Police Unit. Findings confirmed it was a calculated attempt to compromise the integrity of the recruitment exercise.”
Maiwada characterised the arrest as a demonstration of the service’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of its operations, reiterating the NCS’s strict zero-tolerance stance on fraud.
He stated that further investigations are underway to identify similar cases.
Maiwada encouraged Nigerians to confirm all information pertaining to recruitment and auctions via the service’s official communication channels.
“We advise the public to disregard messages or offers from unverified sources and to rely solely on our verified platforms for accurate information.
“The NCS remains committed to identifying, exposing, and prosecuting those who seek to compromise our operations through deceit,” Maiwada concluded.
