The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has expressed his condolences to the Cameroonian community following the demise of the former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou.
Issa Hayatou passed away in Paris at the age of 78 after battling an undisclosed illness. He held the position of CAF President from March 10, 1988, to March 16, 2017, serving for 29 years.
In 2017, he lost his bid for re-election to Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad.
In a statement released by the NFF earlier today, August 9, Ibrahim Gusau described Hayatou as a beloved leader of African football and had worked tirelessly to leave a positive impact on the sport.
The NFF president extended his prayers for Hayatou’s eternal rest and strength for the African football community during this difficult time.
“The NFF and the entire Nigeria football family are saddened by the death of Alhaji Issa Hayatou”, Gusau said according to a statement from the NFF.
“He was a great and much-loved leader of African football and did his best to leave African football greater than he met it.
“Alhaji Hayatou was a man of strong character and integrity. We love him but God loves him more.
“We pray that Almighty Allah will grant him eternal rest and also grant the Cameroonian, nay African football family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
