The Nigerian Navy has confirmed that its operatives killed six suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Anambra during Monday’s sit-at-home.
It also debunked reports that two naval officers were killed during the gun duel that ensued.
The Commanding Officer, Naval Outpost, Onitsha, Anambra State, Adekunle Okeniyi said yesterday in a statement that the IPOB members attempted to attack the naval operatives.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha has been drawn to some false publications that on the 9th August 2001, two naval personnel were killed at Awkuzu during a gun duel with suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members in Anambra State.
“The Naval Outpost Onitsha refutes this fake news and wishes to state categorically that none of its personnel suffered any casualty during the gun duel.
“Rather, the troops fought gallantly and were able to repel the attack which resulted in the loss of six suspected IPOB members while others suffered a serious injury.”
It will be recalled that IPOB has vowed to carry out a total lockdown of the entire southeast every Monday until the government releases its leader, Nnamdi Kanu from custody.
Meanwhile, the Imo Police Command has arrested a suspected Chief Priest of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Mike Abattam, said the suspect, Ikechukeu Umaefulem, was arrested at his shrine in Orlu in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.
Abattam said one pump action gun and five rounds of ammunition, including explosives, knockouts, Biafran flag, and other spiritual items were recovered from him.
He said the arrest was a sequel to the raids on the proscribed Eastern Security Network (ESN) camps and the successful neutralization and decimation of the terror group in the state.
