The National Assembly has scheduled an extraordinary sitting for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to reconsider aspects of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill earlier passed by the House.

The notice, signed by the Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi, informed members that the special session follows the release of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the notice, concerns have been raised that the proposed dates for the Presidential and National Assembly elections coincide with the Ramadan period, a development that could affect voter participation in parts of the country.

To address the issue, lawmakers will undertake a rescission and recommittal of the Bill. A key area for review is the statutory notice period for elections by INEC, which may be reduced from 360 days to 300 days to allow greater flexibility in scheduling and alignment with prevailing national considerations.

The notice stated that all legislative processes relating to the Bill are expected to be concluded the same day, enabling members to proceed with other political engagements, including the forthcoming APC Ward Congresses.

Members were strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the constitutional and national importance of the matter.
