Napoli manager, Rudi Garcia has revealed that Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen is not defending as much as he used to and he has spoken to him about it.
Last weekend, the Italian Serie A season commenced as Napoli who are the league’s reigning champions started the new season on a winning note.
Napoli had to fight from a goal down against newly promoted Frosinone to win the league game 3-1 away from home. Victor Osimhen scored two of Napoli’s three goals.
Even though the 24-year-old striker put on a fantastic offensive performance against the newly promoted side, Garcia wasn’t impressed with his defensive contributions.
The French tactician told DAZN that he had to tell Osimhen how unhappy he was with him over his low defensive contribution to the team.
“Offensively, he was excellent, he scored two goals and there is nothing I can tell him,” Garcia said.
“Defensively, I didn’t like him at all and I told him during the break. He used to press more and defend better in the past. We changed this thing in the second half and we played with more quality.
“I knew he was not fit to play 90 minutes, but we waited for his second goal, he is a leader and this will never change, it’s his strong point.”
Earlier this summer, there were strong speculations that Victor Osimhen who scored 26 goals and provided 5 assists in 32 games to help Napoli win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years last season, wanted to leave the club.
In line with that, clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain, and even clubs from Saudi Arabia reportedly showed interest in him.
However, Osimhen seems set to continue with his football career in Napoli, at least this season, as he is reportedly on the verge of extending his contract with the club.
