The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has claimed most of the Boko Haram insurgents dislodged from Chad Republic have relocated to Borno State.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview with Channels Television, Governor Zulum said the Boko Haram members moved to Borno after they attacked Chadian soldiers, and the Chadian authorities took a strong decision to repel them from their territory.
He revealed that while Chad successfully dislodged the insurgents, the criminals were able to make their way to Nigeria, and Borno State in particular.
“Recently, there was an attack on Chadian soldiers by Boko Haram. Because of this, the Chadian authorities have taken a very strong decision to repel the Boko Haram/insurgents in their territory.
“They have succeeded in sending them away and most of them are now in Nigeria, especially in Borno State,” he said.
The Governor, however, praised the efforts of the federal government, troops of the Nigerian military and other security forces for their efforts towards dislodging the Boko Haram and other criminal elements in the country.
He noted that 90 per cent of Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East have been curbed but admitted that there were still some pockets of insurgents operating in his state.
“As of now, insurgency has been reduced to over 90 per cent in Borno State but this did not happen in a day.
“We still have pockets of Boko Haram, especially in the fringes of Lake Chad as well as in the Sambisa Games Reserve and the Mandara Hills,” the Governor said.
Zulum expressed optimism that terrorism can be crushed totally in the next two years as Nigeria collaborates with neighbouring Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Mali.
