The Lagos State Local Government Elections got off to a mixed start on Saturday, with voting commencing early in some areas while others faced significant delays due to the late arrival of electoral officials and materials.
According to Vanguard, officials from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) arrived promptly in Ward B of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area with election materials, allowing voting to begin at 8:00 a.m.
At Polling Unit 043, also within the ward, materials were delivered by 8:30 a.m., although voting had not yet commenced by 9:12 a.m., as officials were still making final preparations. Despite the slight delay, the atmosphere remained peaceful, with voters patiently awaiting their turn to cast their ballots.
It was a different story in Ward C of Yaba Local Council Development Area, where several polling units suffered notable delays due to the absence of LASIEC officials and voting materials.
At Polling Unit 046, as of 8:58 a.m., no LASIEC official was present, and no ballot boxes had been delivered. Similar scenes were reported at Polling Unit 027, where party agents stood idle, awaiting the arrival of electoral officials.
However, at Polling Unit 023, officials arrived slightly later and had just begun setting up the voting area as of the time of filing this report. Security personnel were visible at most locations, helping to maintain order.
The uneven rollout of electoral activities across polling units highlights logistical lapses on the part of LASIEC, even as millions of Lagos residents head to the polls to elect chairmen and councillors for the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
