The manager of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta has admitted that it is an advantage that his team will play this midweek before their major rivals in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal are contending for the Premier League title against Manchester City and Liverpool. Two weeks ago, it was looking like Liverpool and Arsenal were in the driving seat but that changed in matchday 34 when both clubs lost to Crystal Palace and Aston Villa respectively.
Before the Liverpool and Arsenal game, Manchester City had beaten Luton Town 5-1. Hence, the defeats to their rival placed them in the driving seat in the league title race.
Afterwards, Liverpool defender, Trent Alexander-Arnold, noted that Arsenal lost to Aston Villa because they played after the other title contenders had played.
The reverse is the case this midweek as Arsenal will play Chelsea at 8 p.m. tonight. On Wednesday, Liverpool will be in action against Everton at 8 p.m., and Manchester City will be in action against Brighton at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
In a press conference ahead of the Arsenal vs Chelsea clash at the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta admitted that playing before their title rivals is an advantage.
He said: “That helps, that really helps because then you are winning your matches and making the margins smaller and smaller.
“That’s the only thing we can do at the moment because it’s not in our hands.
“Winning as a consequence of that and bringing the margins shorter and that’s positive.”
Note that Arsenal are currently topping the Premier League table with 74 points in 33 games, on the same point as second-placed Manchester City who still have a game in hand. Liverpool are third, a point below the Gunners.
