MC Alger Title Celebration: Stadium Accident Kills Three Fans In Algeria

A celebratory night for Algerian football turned tragic after three fans died and dozens were injured following a stadium accident at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers.

The incident happened shortly after MC Alger clinched the 2024-2025 Algerian league title.

According to the Algerian Health Ministry, the victims fell from the upper stand of the stadium after a security barrier collapsed, causing a crowd surge in the packed arena.

Local media reported that fans were celebrating MC Alger’s title win when they tumbled onto the lower tier.

More than 70 people were injured and treated at three hospitals in Algiers. Most of the injured have since been discharged, while the seriously wounded are receiving continued medical care.

In a touching gesture of solidarity, MC Alger players and staff visited the hospitals to donate blood for the victims, Reuters reported.

The stadium had been filled to capacity for the final match of the season, which ended in a goalless draw against NC Magra, securing MC Alger’s second consecutive league title.

Green smoke from celebratory flares had filled the air as fans chanted and cheered throughout the game.

However, the post-match celebrations were swiftly overshadowed by the incident. The league trophy presentation was postponed out of respect for the victims and their families.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

An investigation is expected to be launched into the collapse of the security barrier and the stadium’s crowd control measures.
