Inter Milan have completed the signing of Swiss international defender Manuel Akanji from Manchester City on a season-long loan, with an option to buy that could become an obligation under certain conditions.
Manuel Akanji, a 30-year-old centre-back, born in Wiesendangen, Zurich, in 1995 to Nigerian parents, becomes the 23rd Swiss player to represent the Nerazzurri.
Akanji arrives with a wealth of experience at club and international level, having played in Switzerland, Germany, England, and for the Swiss national team.
Akanji began his career at local side Wiesendangen before joining Winterthur in 2007. He later signed for Basel in 2015, where he overcame an early injury setback to win two league titles and a Swiss Cup.
In January 2018, he moved to Borussia Dortmund, making 158 appearances and winning the German Cup and Super Cup.
In 2022, he joined Manchester City, where he became a key figure under Pep Guardiola. During his three years in England, Akanji played 136 matches, scoring five goals and winning multiple trophies including two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Community Shield, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023.
On the international stage, Akanji has earned 71 caps for Switzerland since his debut in 2017. He has represented his country at two World Cups and two European Championships, and was named in the Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament after helping Switzerland reach the quarter-finals.
Inter, in an official statement, described Akanji as a player defined by “serenity, calm and quiet strength,” highlighting his resilience and versatility.
