Lagos State Assembly A ‘Den Of Corruption,’ Says PDP Chieftain Following Obasa’s Impeachment

Lagos

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adetokunbo Pearse, has described the Lagos State House of Assembly as plagued by corruption and inefficiency.

The PDP chieftain argued that the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was driven by political motives rather than the interests of Lagosians.

Pearse alleged that Obasa’s ambition to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027 may have triggered his removal.

The Lagos State House of Assembly is a den of corruption. There is inefficiency there. All they are doing is playing politics. They didn’t do that in the interest of Lagosians,” he told Daily Independent.

Naija News reports that the Lagos Assembly impeached Obasa on Monday, citing multiple statutory and financial violations.

Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, a former chief whip and representative of Apapa Constituency 1.

Pearse, also a member of the Board of Governors for the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI), dismissed the impeachment as mere political maneuvering.

Whether they remove Obasa or not doesn’t really matter to us in Lagos State, because there has not been any performance from them. They have never held the governor accountable,” he said.

The PDP chieftain further claimed that the lawmakers’ decision was influenced by Obasa’s potential gubernatorial aspirations, which he believes conflict with the interests of political elites tied to President Bola Tinubu.

The reason they removed Obasa is not because of corruption or that he is not performing. It’s because he’s considering running for governor against Seyi Tinubu, President Tinubu’s son,” Pearse stated.

He concluded by asserting that the impeachment will not resolve issues within the Assembly, labeling it as merely a cycle of corrupt leadership.

Let them not pretend as if they are doing us a favour or they are doing the state a favour in any way. His removal is not going to sanitize the House of Assembly.

“It’s going to be one corrupt speaker after another. The background for removing him is his stance for running against President Tinubu’s choice and that is the problem,” he added.
