Lagos Govt To Distribute Waste Bags, Bins To Residents

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to distribute waste bags and bins to tenants throughout the state.

This initiative was announced by the Lagos Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in a statement released on Sunday.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during the launch of a community-based environmental sanitation awareness program at Campos Playground, Odunlami Street, emphasized that this effort aims to improve the proper bagging and disposal of waste across Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to prioritize environmental cleanliness and issued a stern warning against littering and the removal of manhole covers.

He expressed concern over the widespread littering of drains and the removal of manholes, stressing the need for all residents to adopt better environmental practices to prevent disease outbreaks.

Accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu noted that many streets he visited had missing manholes filled with refuse.

He announced that the awareness and sensitization campaign would be extended to all 57 local governments and LCDAs to ensure widespread adoption of this initiative, promoting a clean, safe, flood-free, and sustainable environment for all Lagosians.

Sanwo-Olu also revealed plans to form a task force comprising officials from the Ministries of Works and Infrastructure and the Environment to address the issue of manhole removal.

Additionally, he committed to leading members of the executive council in weekend clean-up activities, including street cleaning, neighborhood sanitation, drainage desilting, and waste evacuation. This effort aims to revive the Monthly Sanitation Exercise as a continuous practice.

The governor highlighted the significance of the Tree Planting Day, celebrated globally on July 14th, and encouraged residents to embrace tree planting for temperature regulation and climate change mitigation.

He said, “As a foremost State, Lagos has to be intentional and very proactive in its resolve to take back our environment, and we are engaging within ourselves to ensure we raise the bar. We have plans to ensure we plant a lot of trees this year alone and we monitor their growth while we sustain or improve this number every year to keep ourselves alive.

“I have spoken to the Head of our agency to design ways to achieve growth consistency in this fight for our lives and environment. Why this is important is that it is also a demonstration of our government’s commitment. For all of us to have taken time to have come out this morning signifies that we believe in our tree planting initiative.”

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, noted the importance of reintroducing the sanitation exercise to promote a clean and healthy environment and to foster community participation in waste management.

He emphasized that maintaining a sanitary environment is crucial for public health and longevity.

Wahab encouraged residents to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainages regularly. He assured that LAWMA officials would be on hand to collect and properly dispose of bagged waste.
