The Kano State House of Assembly has officially commenced impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Aminu Gwarzo, following a motion raised during plenary alleging gross misconduct and abuse of office. Lawmakers cited provisions in the 1999 Constitution, which empower state legislatures to initiate impeachment processes against a deputy governor when credible allegations are presented.

The Speaker of the House confirmed that the notice of allegations has been formally served on Gwarzo, giving him a two-week window to respond. Constitutional procedures may include the formation of an investigative panel to examine the claims and present recommendations to the Assembly. Lawmakers allege that Gwarzo received kickbacks from the state’s 44 local government councils between June 2023 and January 2024, collecting approximately ₦1.5 million per council per month, totaling around ₦462 million over seven months.

Sources also noted that the deputy governor has consistently refused to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and has largely remained absent from activities at the Governor’s office and Government House. Observers say the impeachment process could significantly impact the state’s political dynamics if the allegations are upheld.
