Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled coordinated Boko Haram attacks on Monguno and Bitta in Borno State, killing several insurgents, including a top commander of the terrorists and the group’s cameraman.
Naija News reports that the development was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Reuben Kovangiya.
Kovangiya said the troops displayed gallantry by engaging the terrorists with superior firepower, effectively foiling their infiltration attempt into Monguno.
“The resilient troops, during the attempted infiltration, engaged the insurgents with superior firepower, resulting in the neutralisation of several terrorists, among whom was a senior Quaid Commander, Ibn Khalid, and also their cameraman,” he stated.
He added that while pursuing the fleeing terrorists, the soldiers observed blood trails along the withdrawal routes, indicating severe casualties.
Recovered items at the scene included a large quantity of 7.62mm special ammunition, one PKT belt, an AK-47 rifle magazine, a Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb, and other operational gear.
The troops also recovered a camcorder used by the terrorists to document their operations.
“The troops have continued the exploitation to ensure the terrorists are denied freedom of action,” the statement noted.
Kovangiya further revealed that 17 terrorists were neutralised in subsidiary offensives carried out across Sambisa forest, Madagali, and Kaga Local Government Areas.
The troops also captured several motorcycles and other logistics used by the insurgents.
In a separate operation, troops foiled another attempted attack on Bitta, where more insurgents were killed and weapons recovered.
“The troops at Bitta also engaged the terrorists with superior fire power, neutralizing several fighters and recovering additional AK-47 magazines and other combat items,” Kovangiya said.
The Defence Headquarters commended the soldiers for their bravery and charged them to maintain the momentum in the ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
“The troops have been commended by the military higher authorities for their show of resilience and urged them to sustain the fight against the insurgents,” the statement concluded.
