The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the party, putting to rest weeks of internal wrangling and confusion over the party’s leadership structure.
The party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing attended by top party leaders, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Damagum acknowledged that the decision to bring back Anyanwu into the National Working Committee (NWC) was not an easy one but said it was broadly supported by the party’s leadership.
“It was a difficult decision, but it was accepted by many members of the party led by the organs of the party,” he said.
The reinstatement comes after prolonged litigation and a leadership tussle over who occupies the office of the PDP National Secretary, a position that has been hotly contested in recent months.
In a related move, the PDP has also cancelled its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, initially scheduled for June 30, citing unresolved procedural issues with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Instead, Damagum revealed that the party would hold an expanded caucus meeting, which would serve as a stepping stone toward convening a properly constituted NEC meeting.
“We will have an expanded Caucus. At the next Caucus, we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC,” Damagum stated.
The Acting Chairman explained that the party was unable to meet INEC’s requirements regarding official notification of the NEC meeting, which typically requires the signatures of both the National Chairman and the National Secretary.
“Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice. So what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus,” he added.
INEC had previously rejected a letter signed solely by Damagum, insisting that such communication must be jointly signed by the National Chairman and Secretary, in line with the party’s constitution and electoral laws.
