United States of America House Speaker, Mike Johnson, has called for President Joe Biden to resign immediately following his announcement to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Johnson’s statement comes amidst growing concerns over Biden’s age and capability to serve another term.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” Johnson asserted.
Biden’s decision to step down was influenced by his recent COVID-19 diagnosis, which forced him into isolation in Rehoboth Beach, further fueling the debate over his fitness for office.
This move adds Biden to the list of U.S. presidents who have opted not to seek re-election after just one term, with the last being Lyndon Johnson in 1968.
The political landscape has been tumultuous, marked by Biden’s health challenges and an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on July 13.
Biden’s withdrawal has intensified the pressure on the Democratic Party to find a viable candidate to prevent Trump from making a potential comeback.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who has recently gained traction on the campaign trail, is now positioned to be the Democratic nominee.
Her campaign has focused on key issues such as abortion rights and her historic role as the first female, Black, and South Asian vice president.
The Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19 is expected to be a pivotal moment for Harris and the party.
