There was wild jubilation across Port Harcourt and other parts of Rivers State on Wednesday evening following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of the immediate end of the six-month emergency rule in the state.
Naija News reports that the President, in a statement, declared the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly, effective September 18.
According to The Guardian, Traders at Mile One and Mile 3 markets, as well as commercial motorists, were seen glued to their radios ahead of the 6 p.m. news bulletin by local stations.
The moment the announcement was made, jubilation broke out. Meat sellers turned their knives and wooden tables into makeshift drums, while tomato traders used their containers to beat celebratory rhythms.
Commercial drivers plying Ikwerre Road, Rumokoro, Ada George, and Ogbogoro reportedly reduced fares in excitement, with others honking recklessly in celebration.
The Guardian observed that residents in Government Reserved Areas, including Casablanca, poured into the streets, singing, dancing, and waving banners. The impromptu street parties led to gridlocks in parts of the city.
Some jubilant residents described the reinstatement of Fubara as “a victory for democracy” and “a moment of relief” after months of political uncertainty.
Excitement is expected to peak on Thursday as residents prepare to welcome Governor Fubara back to Port Harcourt.
