Brentford have officially announced the signing of ex-Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson on a two-year deal, bringing the England international back to the Premier League.
Jordan Henderson, 34, joins the Bees on a free transfer after parting ways with Ajax this summer, following a short stint in the Eredivisie that came after a controversial spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq.
Henderson’s arrival marks a major statement of intent from Brentford, who are looking to inject leadership and experience into their ranks after a summer exodus.
“When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision,” said Brentford head coach Keith Andrews.
“We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad.”
It is a big addition for a club that recently lost key dressing room figures such as Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken, and Ben Mee. Henderson, who has racked up 84 caps for England and captained Liverpool for eight years, brings a legacy that few in the game can rival.
During his 12-year tenure at Anfield, Henderson lifted nearly every major club trophy available: the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the Community Shield. He succeeded Steven Gerrard as captain in 2015 and went on to become a central figure in Liverpool’s resurgence under Jürgen Klopp.
“Jordan has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years,” Andrews added. “He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club.”
Henderson’s top-flight journey began at Sunderland, where he broke into the Premier League as a teenager and made 70 appearances before his £20 million move to Liverpool in 2011. He left Liverpool after making 492 appearances and scoring 33 goals.
