‘It’s A Security Threat’ – UNIZIK Bans Sign-out Celebrations

UNIZIK Adjusts Convocation Date After Threat By IPOB

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has placed a ban on the popular “signing off” celebrations usually carried out by final-year students after their examinations.

Naija News reports that directive was announced on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke.

According to the university, the decision takes effect immediately.

The school explained that the yearly ritual often leads to chaos, violence, and disruption of normal academic activities within the campus.

It also raised concerns about the presence of outsiders who usually join the celebrations, saying their actions pose risks to the safety of students and staff.

UNIZIK stated that any student caught engaging in the activity would face strict disciplinary action, including possible suspension, while outsiders who attempt to participate may be arrested and prosecuted for breaching peace on campus.

The management assured that it remains committed to creating a safe and orderly learning environment.

Students were urged to focus on their studies and report any misconduct or security threat to the authorities.

The statement read in part: “This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events.

“Furthermore, the presence of unauthorised individuals on campus poses a threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and the broader university community. In fulfilment of its obligation to maintain order, protect life, and safeguard property, the university management has taken this decisive step, deeming such activities unacceptable.

“Any student found involved in orchestration (‘signing off’) or related activities risks severe disciplinary measures, including rustication. Any outsiders entering the university premises to support such activities may face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.”
