The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the final voter register for the forthcoming Governorship Elections in Edo and Ondo, as confirmed by an official statement.
The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, made this announcement in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday.
He noted in the statement that Edo has a total of 2,629,025 registered voters, while Ondo has 2,053,061.
Olumekun noted that the final registers received approval during a commission meeting held in Abuja.
He further mentioned that the register includes new voters from the recent Continuous Voter Registration, as well as the number of successful applicants who transferred from other states to these two states.
According to his report, of the 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo, 1,370,061, or 52.11 per cent, are male, while 1,258,964, or 47.89 per cent, are female.
Additionally, he pointed out that the youth demographic (ages 18 to 35) comprises 983,133 individuals, accounting for 37.4 per cent, followed by 914,806 middle-aged individuals (ages 36 to 49).
He clarified that these two age groups together represent 1,897,939, which is 72.2 per cent of the total registered voters.
Olumekun highlighted that the occupational breakdown of registered voters indicates that students make up the largest group, totalling 868,764, which represents 33.05 per cent of the electorate.
In contrast, there are 4,199 individuals identified as Persons with Disabilities (PWD), accounting for 0.16 per cent.
He also noted that the updated voter register reflects a 4.9 per cent increase compared to the 2023 General Elections, which recorded 2,501,081 voters.
In the case of Ondo State, Olumekun reported that there are now 2,053,061 registered voters, with 1,034,006 (50.36 per cent) being male and 1,034,964 (47.89 per cent) female.
Among these voters, youths aged 18 to 35 represent 726,944 individuals (35.41 per cent), closely followed by 721,982 middle-aged voters (36 to 49 years), who account for 35.17 per cent.
Collectively, these two age groups make up 1,448,926 voters or 70.57 per cent of the total registered electorate in the state.
Regarding occupational status, Olumekun mentioned that students again form the largest segment, with 694,938 individuals representing 33.85 per cent of the voters.
He also pointed out that there are 1,782 PWDs, which is a mere 0.09 per cent of the total.
“The new register represents a 3.0 per cent increase over the 2023 General Elections figure of 1,191,344,” Olumekun stated.
He mentioned that a comprehensive breakdown of the register for each state, categorized by Local Government Areas, gender, age, occupation, and disability, has been made available on the INEC website and its social media channels for public access.
Olumekun also indicated that INEC would announce the schedule for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards in the two states within the coming days.
