Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assured that the police will remain impartial and professional in ensuring a fair electoral process for all political parties contesting in the Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21.
Speaking in Benin on Thursday during the signing of a peace accord by political parties and candidates, Egbetokun emphasized the police’s role in creating a level playing field for all.
The peace accord was initiated by the National Peace Committee, led by former military head of state, Abubakar Abdulsalami, to promote a peaceful election environment.
Although the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, declined to sign the peace accord, other candidates, including Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), along with other parties, endorsed the agreement.
Egbetokun reaffirmed the police’s commitment to a peaceful and secure election, stating, “I’m here today to reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful and secure electoral process.
“We recognise the importance of this moment and the trust placed on us to protect the integrity of this election.
“We will remain impartial, professional, and vigilant while providing a level playing ground for political parties and their candidates.”
The IGP called on all stakeholders to prioritize peace, tolerance, and respect throughout the electoral process.
“I urge all stakeholders to embrace peace, tolerance, and respect. Let’s work together to create a conducive environment for a free, fair, and peaceful election, where every voter can exercise their rights to vote without fear and intimidation,” Egbetokun added.
