Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen has opened up about his decision to join the Turkish Super Lig champions, Galatasaray, during the summer transfer window.
Recall that Victor Osimhen joined the Turkish giants on loan after unsuccessful negotiations with English Premier League club Chelsea and Saudi Arabian team Al-Ahli.
The 25-year-old Nigerian striker had initially considered staying at Napoli until January, believing it would be a fair decision. However, his mind changed when Galatasaray reached out to him, prompting him to reevaluate his situation.
“I had plans to remain at Napoli and possibly leave in January,” Osimhen explained during a press conference at Galatasaray’s training facility. “But when Galatasaray contacted me, I realized it was important to take control of my destiny. It was also vital for me to remain at Napoli for the time being, especially since the move I ideally wanted didn’t materialize.”
Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has made an impressive start to the season, currently boasting two goals and four assists in his first four matches.
Meanwhile, Osimhen has addressed speculation about his ambitions for the season, specifically regarding the top scorer award in the Turkish Super Lig.
In his three league appearances since the loan move in January, he has scored twice, leading to concerns that he may find it challenging to adjust, particularly with Mauro Icardi, who has already established himself as the team’s principal goal contributor.
Despite these doubts, Osimhen has forged a strong rapport with Icardi both on and off the pitch. He made it clear that his primary focus is on the collective well-being of the team rather than on individual awards.
“Icardi is an incredible player and a legend at this club,” Osimhen noted, highlighting their compatibility in gameplay.
“While he has proven to be a significant scoring threat, my priority lies in the team’s overall success. I am not overly concerned about becoming the league’s leading scorer. My goal is to contribute to the team by scoring when I can, assisting my teammates, and supporting both the defense and the attack, fulfilling the coach’s tactical needs.”
