The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has issued a deadline for the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to appear before it by July 30.

Naija News learnt that the summons pertains to issues regarding budget allocations.

The committee has requested that Olukoyede and his management team present themselves to discuss the EFCC’s budget performance and any challenges faced by the commission.

Rep. Obinna Onwusibe, who chairs the committee, voiced his dissatisfaction after a scheduled oversight visit to the EFCC’s office in Abuja was met with resistance.

The committee criticized the EFCC’s leadership for what it described as a dismissive attitude, including barring committee members from entering the commission’s premises. After being denied entry, the committee returned to the National Assembly.

Prior to the visit, the committee had coordinated with the EFCC to schedule this oversight inspection. However, upon arrival, they were informed that the chairman was unexpectedly called away due to an urgent matter at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Commenting on the situation, Onwusibe stated, “In performing our constitutional functions we had written to the EFCC for this oversight visit.

“The latest letter to EFCC was last week and we all agreed that the oversight is going to be today.

“The essence of the oversight is for the committee to know the budget performance of the EFCC as appropriated by this National Assembly.

“That was exactly why we went and to also see other things, including the challenges being faced by the EFCC.

He noted that the committee had requested the presence of the EFCC chairman and the zonal commanders for a comprehensive discussion.

But, the committee also saw that they were not on ground,” he added.

The committee decided to postpone the oversight activities and has summoned the EFCC chairman and his team to appear before them.

As far as we’re concerned, the functions and integrity of this 10th National Assembly cannot be taken for granted.

“We’ve written severally to the commission, requesting information and documents and are yet to get them,” Onwusibe emphasized.
