Fresh details have emerged on the sudden resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Friday.
Naija News reports that insiders who spoke with Punch linked the decision to the reported defection plans of his political rival, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the ruling party.
Multiple party sources told Saturday Punch that Ganduje’s decision to step down stemmed from an ongoing arrangement between President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), to formally join the APC.
As early as 3 pm on Friday, tension reportedly gripped the APC national secretariat in Abuja, with top party officials scrambling to prevent Ganduje from resigning.
“We are currently pleading with him not to resign. He is upset that Kwankwaso is coming to the APC. I think the two of them are sworn enemies. All the stakeholders are begging him to stay,” a party insider disclosed.
However, around 4:15 pm, news filtered through that Ganduje had finally bowed out.
The source stated, “He has eventually resigned. We couldn’t stop him. I think there is something personal between him and Kwankwaso, who is ready to join the APC after some discussions with the President.”
While the resignation came as a surprise to many, the atmosphere at the APC headquarters remained relatively calm.
“There is no crisis, just that the chairman has resigned and people gathered at the secretariat to discuss about it,” said one party official.
Ganduje and Kwankwaso have had a bitter and protracted political rivalry dating back to their days in Kano politics.
Ganduje, who served as Kwankwaso’s deputy from 2011 to 2015, later succeeded him as governor and has since clashed repeatedly with the NNPP leader over political control in the state.
