Unidentified individuals have shot and killed the Chairman of Nanka Ward 1 for the Young Progressives Party, Chief Joe Mohel, in Anambra State.
Nanka, located in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, was the site of the tragic incident that occurred late on Saturday, following a meeting between community members and Chinwe Nnabuife, the representative for Orumba North and South Federal Constituency.
According to sources in the area, the meeting was convened in response to a recent Appeal Court ruling mandating a re-run election between Nnabuife and the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Orumba North and South Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election, Okwudili Ezenwankwo.
The gathering, organized by the deceased for the House of Representatives member Nnabuife and constituency members, became the backdrop for the violent incident.
An eyewitness, requesting anonymity, revealed, “He was killed last (Saturday) night after organizing a meeting between the member representing Orumba North and South in the Federal House of Representatives, Chinwe Nnabuife, and her Nanka constituents. The unidentified persons, who arrived in a Lexus 350 SUV, fired several shots into the air before fatally shooting Mohel at the village hall. They also kidnapped one person.”
The eyewitness continued, “Nnabuife was threatened not to campaign in Nanka where the Appeal Court ordered a re-run election. But on Saturday, she held a meeting with YPP members in Nanka Ward 1. Mohel organized the meeting. Immediately after Nnabuife left, some thugs arrived at the venue in an SUV vehicle and opened fire on the ward chairman.”
The state chairman of YPP, Moses Obi, confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, we have heard about it, but we don’t have the full details yet. We are preparing to reach the community, and by the time we have all the full details, we will let you know.”
The state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, mentioned that the command had not received any information regarding the incident.
However, Ikenga urged the affected individuals to visit the nearest police station and file a report about the incident for further action.
