Unknown gunmen have killed a police officer providing security to a Chinese and his driver, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
An eyewitness who spoke with Punch under the condition of anonymity disclosed that the police operative was killed on Mission Hill Road at a spot where the office of the Nigeria Correctional Service is located.
The source added that the armed men trailed their targets from Umuahia Cosmopolitan Area before opening fire on them at the scene of the incident.
The incident caused panic among residents of the capital city as the rumor was ripe that unknown gunmen were shooting in the city.
The source said, “The incident in Umuahia was over a white man that came out from a bank who was trailed to mission hill near prisons headquarters Umuahia.
“The whiteman was robbed of his cash, the policemen guarding him was killed and his was driver shot on the leg. The army came around to carry their corpse.
The incident was confirmed by the spokesman of the state police command, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna.
Ogbonna further stated that the incident was an armed robbery attack, adding that the hoodlums had allegedly trailed the Chinese from a commercial Bank where he went to make a withdrawal.
