Italy have appointed retired midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach of the national team, the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) confirmed today, June 15.

Gennaro Gattuso, a 47-year-old AC Milan legend replaces Luciano Spalletti, who stepped down after Italy’s crushing 3-0 defeat to Norway in a World Cup qualifier on June 6, a result that ultimately cost him his job.

Gattuso, a World Cup winner in 2006 with 73 international caps to his name, will now take charge of the Azzurri as they aim to return to the global stage, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup in sight.

The national side has endured a turbulent few years, winning Euro 2020 but failing to qualify for the last two World Cups.

The FIGC announced that Gattuso will be officially presented at a press conference on Thursday, June 19, at 11:00 CEST at Hotel Parco dei Principi in Rome.

President of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina, expressed confidence in the new coach’s ability to lead Italy back to the top of international football.

“Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football, the blue jersey is like a second skin for him,” Gravina said.

“His motivation, professionalism, and experience will be fundamental as we face our upcoming challenges. He understands the weight of our objectives and has shown great dedication in accepting this role.”

Gattuso’s appointment signals a bold new chapter for Italy, with the fiery and passionate tactician expected to inject energy and discipline into a squad in need of direction.
