Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the embattled Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, met face-to-face on Thursday.
Sources who spoke with Vanguard disclosed that the closed-door peace meeting, held in Abuja, reportedly ended on a positive note, with both men exchanging pleasantries and even holding hands.
This marks the first reconciliation effort involving Fubara and the aggrieved lawmakers since tensions erupted, culminating in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 19, 2025.
Following the declaration, the National Assembly approved the emergency rule and appointed Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas (retd), former Chief of Naval Staff, to oversee the state’s affairs for a six-month period.
While Fubara had previously held separate meetings with President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Thursday’s engagement is seen by observers as the most tangible step yet toward resolving the standoff that has paralysed governance in the oil-rich state.
Wike, who has been at the centre of the crisis, has repeatedly insisted that any reconciliation must include Fubara addressing grievances raised by lawmakers, particularly over the alleged non-payment of salaries and allowances for more than two years.
