Tragedy struck again in Borno State on Wednesday after a passenger vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram terrorists, killing four persons and injuring 10 others.
The incident occurred around 3:30 pm along the Damboa–Maiduguri road, involving a Suzuki pick-up truck conveying passengers to Maiduguri.
Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Borno State Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the injured victims had been taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri for medical attention.
“I confirm that the incident happened. Four persons died and 10 sustained various degrees of injuries,” Daso told The Guardian.
The explosion reportedly triggered heavy gridlock along the busy highway, delaying movement for hours as emergency services and security operatives responded to the scene.
Tuesday’s blast comes just days after a similar attack rocked Konduga Local Government Area last Friday, where a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated an IED at a crowded fish market, killing 12 persons and injuring 18 others.
According to security sources who spoke with The Guardian, the attacker infiltrated the market disguised as a civilian before detonating the explosive at a popular joint.
