A massive fire broke out at Moniya Market in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State on Monday, leaving 17 shops gutted and causing extensive damage.
Naija News gathered that the inferno, which started around 12:30am, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge.
According to Punch, the fire led to significant destruction, ruining valuable goods and large quantities of cash.
Witnesses noted that the fire spread quickly, prompting an urgent response from the fire service to contain it and reduce further losses.
Kolawole Balogun, the Babaloja of Moniya Garage, and Saliu Bello, the chairman of the garage, confirmed that they were alerted by a security guard. Balogun expressed shock and sorrow over the scale of the losses.
“I rushed to the market as soon as I got the call. We lost multimillion-naira goods. The prompt arrival of the fire service prevented even greater devastation.
“In addition to the goods, cash in millions of naira was also destroyed. Many traders often store their money in their shops when they leave for the night,” he said.
In addition to the destruction of physical goods, significant amounts of cash stored in shops by traders were also destroyed. Many of the affected shop owners had kept their earnings in their businesses overnight.
