The world football governing body, FIFA has confirmed that South Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria will take place at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
According to a communication from FIFA’s Head of Qualifiers and International Matches, Gordon Savic, through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Group C encounter will kick off at 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time.
The 46,000-capacity Toyota Stadium, formerly known as Vodacom Park and later Free State Stadium, is one of South Africa’s most prominent sporting venues. It was one of the selected match centres for the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.
The fixture is part of matchday eight in the African qualifiers and is expected to be crucial in deciding the sole automatic slot available to the group winner for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria will go into the match just three days after facing Rwanda at home in Uyo on September 6.
South Africa currently lead Group C with 13 points from six games. Nigeria, who have managed just one win, four draws, and one loss, sit in fourth place with 7 points. The group also features Benin, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
Only the group winner will qualify directly for the World Cup. The team that finishes second could still progress via the CAF play-offs and, if successful, the inter-confederation play-offs.
The Super Eagles remain mathematically in contention for qualification with four matches left to play. After the September games, Nigeria will travel to Lesotho and then host Benin in October to conclude their qualifying campaign.
The reverse fixture between Nigeria and South Africa in June ended in a 1-1 draw in Uyo. Themba Zwane opened the scoring for South Africa before Fisayo Dele-Bashiru equalised early in the second half.
