Mike Edwards, a former contestant on the reality TV show Big Brother Naija and a two-time Nigerian high jump champion, achieved a remarkable victory in his first-ever professional boxing match against Jake Cornish.
Mike Edwards won the fight which took place at the Dublin Arena on Saturday by unanimous decision from the judges after the bout dragged on through all the five rounds.
In an unexpected move, Edwards announced in April that he was transitioning from athletics to professional boxing and joined the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division.
The division is under the management of Olajide Williams, also known as KSI, an English social media personality and Nigerian-born professional boxer.
While announcing his exit from athletics to professional boxing in April, the former Big Brother Naija housemate said: “Breaking News: Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on #MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”
Interestingly, his debut fight ended with a victory over Jake Cornish who is an actor and a former Love Island contestant.
Following Mike Edwards’ victory, Misfits Boxing posted on X, “An impressive MFB debut for #aireyys as he gets the decision victory. Mike Edwards gets his first #MisfitsBoxing to win.”
