Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, continued their impressive run at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AfroBasket championship in Angola with a commanding 87-66 victory over defending champions Tunisia on Friday.
The win at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda marked D’Tigers’ second consecutive triumph in Group B, following their 77-59 victory over Madagascar in the opening game.
Josh Okogie, who plays for the Houston Rockets in the NBA, led the charge with 33 points, the highest individual tally of the game. His performance powered Nigeria to a dominant start, including a 10-0 opening run that set the tone for the encounter.
By the end of the first quarter, D’Tigers held a 29-16 advantage, which they extended to 48-33 at halftime. Tunisia, still recovering from an earlier 86-65 loss to Cameroon, tried to fight back but could not match Nigeria’s intensity.
The Nigerians widened the gap to 68-47 in the third quarter and never looked back, sealing a 21-point win to stay top of their group.
The defeat extended Tunisia’s poor run in the competition, with the three-time champions missing key veterans Makram Romdhane and Radhouane Slimane. Their reliance on Jawhar Jawadi was not enough to stop Nigeria from recording a comfortable win.
The victory keeps alive Nigeria’s push for a second AfroBasket title, ten years after their first in 2015. Ironically, Tunisia’s last defeat at the tournament before this year also came against Nigeria during the 2015 edition.
D’Tigers will face Cameroon in their final group game on Sunday, a clash expected to decide who finishes top of Group B, as both sides currently boast perfect records.
