The Abia State Government has refuted claims by Enyimba Radio FM Aba that government officials, accompanied by security operatives, stormed the station’s premises and harassed its workers and journalists.
Speaking via a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government described the claims as a “dubious misrepresentation” intended to mislead the public and gain unwarranted sympathy.
Ekeoma clarified that its actions were directed at enforcing development control laws at an ongoing construction project of a three-storey building, allegedly intended to be a hotel, on the premises, not against the radio station.
He explained that the Aba North Planning Authority (ABNPA) had served multiple legal notices to the developers, requesting compliance with building regulations but despite these notices, the developers reportedly failed to provide the necessary documents and continued construction illegally.
According to Ekeoma, the site had been sealed three times by ABNPA, but the developers unlawfully removed government seals on each occasion and resumed work.
He said, “The questions to ask the developers are simple. Why have they been unable to produce the required documents to show compliance with development control requirements?
“Why are they constructing a commercial building with four floors in a residential neighbourhood within the Aba GRA?
“And why did they choose to mislead the public about the legitimate enforcement activities being carried out on their premises?”
Ekeoma added that neighbours in the area expressed satisfaction with the government’s actions, welcoming the enforcement as a move to restore sanity to the GRA.
Dismissing any suggestion of hostility towards the media outfit, Ekeoma emphasized that the government has no issue with Enyimba Radio or its operations.
He accused the developers of attempting to use the station to shield their illegal activities, urging the management of Enyimba Radio to steer clear of what he described as “petty politics.”
The Abia State government wishes to caution the management of Enyimba FM to distance the media outfit from the antics of desperate politicians who are trying to remain relevant through mischief and needless controversies,” Ekeoma stated.
