The Nigerian Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) has strongly condemned the recent protest in Ghana targeting Nigerians.
Naija News earlier reported that some Ghanaian citizens staged a protest against Nigerians, accusing them of engaging in mass prostitution, ritual killings, kidnapping, and violent crimes in their country.
In a viral video seen on Tuesday, the protesters, numbering in their hundreds, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”
Reacting in a statement to Naija News on Tuesday night, Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) described the anti-Nigeria protest as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”
The Committee called on both Nigeria and Ghana to maintain the long-standing bond of friendship, mutual respect, and regional cooperation that binds the two nations.
It maintained that the two countries must keep the flame of brotherhood alive, reaffirming that Nigeria and Ghana, as key members of ECOWAS, should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter.
Furthermore, the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs commended the swift intervention of the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, for their timely and diplomatic handling of the situation.
It also lauded both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for working collaboratively to de-escalate tensions and restore calm.
Reassuring Nigerians living in Ghana, the Committee noted that the authorities of both nations are in active communication and have already taken proactive steps to manage the situation and protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens.
The Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs stated that it stands with every law-abiding Nigerian in Ghana and urge calm as the appropriate diplomatic channels are being effectively explored.
The Committee also urged Nigerians living in Ghana to remain law abiding and desist from inciteful words and continually toe the path of peace and harmony.
