Crystal Palace have officially announced the signing of highly-rated teenage winger Romain Esse from Millwall on a long-term contract lasting five and a half years.

The deal is reported to be valued at £12 million, with the potential for the total fee to increase to £14.5 million through various performance-based add-ons.

Romain Esse, 19, is an emerging talent who has risen through the ranks of the Millwall academy. He has already made a significant impact on the field, representing England at under-18, under-19, and under-20 levels. His professional debut came at the age of 17 on January 26, 2022, and since then, he has played 66 games for Millwall, netting seven goals in the process.

In making the announcement, Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, stating, “Romain is the type of player who gets crowds off their seats – the kind of player that has long been associated with South London and with Crystal Palace Football Club. Everyone at the club is excited about the prospect of watching him shine on the pitch and fulfil his vast potential.”

Romain Esse has made significant contributions this season, scoring five goals for Millwall. His most recent goal came in a challenging 2-1 defeat against Norwich City, where his performance showcased his talent despite the adverse result. Millwall manager Alex Neil had previously opted to leave Esse out of the lineup during their 3-0 FA Cup victory over Dagenham & Redbridge, stirring discussions surrounding the youngster’s future amid ongoing transfer speculation.

The transfer was finalized over the weekend after Esse successfully passed a thorough medical examination. Expressing his excitement about the move, Esse remarked on the Palace website, “I’m very excited to be here. It’s a good project and a good opportunity, so I just can’t wait to get started.”

As for Crystal Palace, under the management of Oliver Glasner, the team is looking to build on its recent performances.

The Eagles are currently placed 15th in the Premier League standings and headed into the weekend’s match against West Ham on Saturday at 15:00 GMT, having secured a vital 2-0 victory over Leicester City that saw them move eight points clear of the relegation zone. This signing adds a fresh edge to Palace’s squad as they aim to continue their upward momentum in the league.
