A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to pay ₦10 million to #EndSARS protesters for violating their rights during the 2024 anniversary procession.
Naija News reports that the ruling was delivered on Thursday, July 24, 2025, by Justice M. Kakaki.
The court found that the police acted unlawfully by harassing and disrupting citizens who were peacefully commemorating the fourth anniversary of the 2020 #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2024.
Justice Kakaki stated that while the police are empowered by law to maintain order, their actions must be carried out within the framework of the law and democracy.
The court confirmed that the applicants were exercising their right to peaceful assembly and association, which is guaranteed by Section 40 of Nigeria’s Constitution.
The applicants include over 20 individuals as well as three civil rights groups; Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Take It Back Movement (TIB), and the Campaign for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).
They had approached the court after facing intimidation and disruption by law enforcement officers during the peaceful gathering.
The judge ruled in favour of the protesters, declaring that their fundamental rights were breached.
The ₦10 million compensation is to be shared among all the applicants.
