CAF Announces Increase Of 150% In Women’s AFCON Prize Money

The Confederation of African Football has announced that the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will have a new trophy starting from this year’s edition of the competition.

The new WAFCON trophy will be unveiled via CAF’s digital platforms on Wednesday, according to a statement from the football body on Sunday, June 29.

CAF’s statement reads: “The new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Morocco, the host nation for this year’s event.

“The new trophy is part of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop Women’s Football in Africa.

“CAF will launch the trophy on its digital pages in the afternoon, followed by an activation event with sponsors, TotalEnergies, on the same day in the evening.”

This development is coming barely a week before the commencement of this year’s edition of WAFCON, which was postponed from 2024 to July 5, 2025, in Morocco. The tournament is expected to end on July 26.

Aside from the new trophy, the winners of the 2024 WAFCON will go home with improved prize money. Instead of the usual $975,000, the winners will earn $2,400,000.

The 12-team tournament will commence with the hosts, Morocco, who are in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, taking on Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who are the most successful team in the competition with 11 wins, are in Group B alongside Botswana, Tunisia and Algeria.

The reigning champions of the competition, South Africa, are in Group C with Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.

Note that WAFCON is used as a qualification path for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup.
