The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a record-breaking total prize pool of $10.4 million for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The financial windfall comes as part of CAF’s renewed commitment to boost the visibility and value of CHAN, a competition exclusively for players active in their domestic leagues.
For the first time, the champions will walk away with a whopping $3.5 million, a dramatic 75% increase from the $2 million awarded in the previous edition.
The runner-up will receive $1.2 million, while third and fourth-place finishers will earn $700,000 and $600,000, respectively.
Even teams exiting at the quarter-final stage will get a sizeable $450,000. The third and fourth-placed group stage teams are taking home between $300,000 and $200,000, and the bottom teams in five-team groups are also securing $200,000 each.
In all, all 19 participating nations will benefit financially, regardless of how far they go in the competition.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasised the significance of the prize increase, tying it to the confederation’s broader mission to invest in African talent and infrastructure.
“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement released by CAF.
He added that CHAN remains “a key part of our strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global broadcasters.”
The 2024 edition of CHAN, officially titled CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, is slated for August 2 to 30, 2025. It will be jointly hosted by three nations: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda for the first time in the history of the tournament.
Among the 19 teams set to feature are defending champions Senegal, record holders Morocco and DR Congo, Algeria, Guinea, Zambia, and notably, Nigeria, who are returning to the competition after missing the last edition.
Note that the home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria have yet to win the tournament since it started in 2009. The reigning champions are Senegal, and the two most successful countries in the competition are Morocco and DR Congo (two titles each).
