The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asserted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) can disdain the living following its recent criticism of the state burial given to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Naija News reports that in a statement on Friday, the ADC described the recent tributes by the Federal Government as “hypocritical, opportunistic and carefully stage-managed”.
The ADC, through its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, faulted the Federal Executive Council’s tribute to Buhari, describing it as a calculated political move rather than a sincere act of mourning.
“The choreographed Federal Executive Council tribute, complete with a publicised appearance by our late President’s grieving son, was not a demonstration of genuine respect,” Abdullahi stated.
According to him, the tribute was a “calculated public relations stunt by an unpopular government” aimed at distracting Nigerians from the Tinubu administration’s “deepening failures” and rewriting history to its advantage.
In response, the APC, in a statement released on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described ADC’s reaction as insensitive, unacceptable, and politically motivated.
Morka stated that President Bola Tinubu acted appropriately by honouring Buhari with a state burial and by supporting the grieving Buhari family, emphasising the late President’s legacy as a former military Head of State, a democratically elected two-term President, and a devoted public servant.
Morka further stated that ADC’s labelling of official tributes and state gestures as “political exploitation” was unjustifiable and dishonourable, particularly during a period of national mourning.
APC accused the opposition party of attempting to exploit a national moment of grief for political gain and urged Nigerians to reject what he described as “the ADC’s brand of desperate opposition politics” and to remain focused on national unity and development.
He said, “The party’s criticism of the dignified state burial accorded the late President is as spooky as it is unconscionable.
“The ADC has once again shown itself to lack empathy and understanding of customary state practices.
“What would the ADC have had President Tinubu do?
“Deny the late President Buhari the honour of a befitting state burial? Withhold empathy and support for the bereaved former First Family? As a party that can begrudge the dead, the ADC must surely disdain the living.
“President Tinubu demonstrated compassion, patriotism, and leadership by overseeing and participating in the funeral rites of a man who gave so much to our dear nation.”
