Coach Erik ten Hag has tasted his first defeat in the 2024-2025 Premier League season as his Manchester United squad failed to hold their own against Brighton.
Ten Hag, who was almost sacked by the management of the Red Devils at the end of last season, started the campaign with a slim 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford in the opening weekend of the season.
United were expected to build on that result this weekend against Brighton who also started their campaign with a 3-0 away win over Everton. But coach Fabian Hürzeler and his boys proved too good for their visitors at Falmer Stadium.
Danny Welbeck got the match opener for Brighton in the 32nd minute of the encounter thanks to an assist from Kaoru Mitoma.
Brighton enjoyed the lead throughout the first half and went into the break with it forcing coach Ten Hag to make some drastic changes, including taking out Mason Mount for new signing Joshua Zirkzee in the 46th minute.
Ten Hag’s move yielded the needed result as Manchester United got the equalizer in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later, the Dutch tactician took out Marcus Rashford for Alejandro Garnacho as he wanted his team to press more aggressively. Unfortunately, that didn’t make much difference.
When the travelling fans thought they would leave the Falmer Stadium with at least a point, 22-year-old João Pedro broke their hearts by scoring the match-winner in the 95th minute as the game ended in a 2-1 defeat for Manchester United.
