The Awujale of Ijebuland, Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has died at the age of 91.
Naija News reports that the monarch passed away on Sunday, just a few hours after the demise of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Western Post, a reliable source close to the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu-Ode and officials within the Ogun State Government confirmed the monarch’s death on Sunday.
Oba Adetona, a longtime friend of Buhari, ascended the throne in 1960 and was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers and a highly respected voice among Yoruba monarchs and across the country.
Details of the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s death are still sketchy, and official statements from the palace and state government are expected shortly.
