Several individuals involved in the 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests have either lost their lives or been detained by police authorities.
Naija News reports that the #EndBadGovernance which took place from August 1st to 10th was in response to widespread economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
Protests took place in cities like Lagos, Kano, Gombe, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Kebbi, and Abuja, with some instances turning violent.
According to human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, a total of 2,111 protesters were arrested across the country during the protests.
Falana disclosed that out of the 2,111 arrested protesters, 1,403 were brought before various courts and subsequently placed in prison custody.
He criticized the authorities for denying the protesters access to legal representation, which resulted in their detention.
Falana stated, “Out of the 2,111 arrested suspects, 1,403 have been arraigned in various courts. Painfully, the suspects were ordered to be remanded in prison custody due to a lack of legal representation.
“The suspects were denied legal representation even though the Nigerian Bar Association had publicly announced its intention to provide lawyers to defend them.”
