Amidst mounting pressure from within his own party, President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to remain in the race for the 2024 Presidential Election.
In a statement issued from his Delaware beach home, where he is currently isolating due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, the 81-year-old president expressed his resolve to continue his campaign.
“The stakes are high, and the choice is clear. Together, we will win,” Biden stated, emphasizing his determination to overcome the challenges ahead.
He also announced his intention to return to the campaign trail next week, signalling a swift recovery from his illness, as confirmed by his physician.
Despite Biden’s declaration, political tensions within the Democratic Party are escalating.
Recent weeks have seen an increasing number of Democratic lawmakers and key donors publicly urging the president to reconsider his candidacy.
Following a poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump, concerns about Biden’s age and health have intensified. To date, more than 30 House Democrats and four senators have called for him to step aside.
Prominent figures such as Silicon Valley investor Michael Moritz and actor George Clooney have voiced their belief that Biden should prioritize the party’s chances of victory over personal ambition.
“Sadly, President Biden has a choice — vanity or virtue,” Moritz told the New York Times.
Reports suggest that internal discussions within Biden’s family about a potential exit strategy have taken place, although no final decision has been made.
Vice President Kamala Harris, seen as the likely successor if Biden were to withdraw, has reportedly held an emergency call with donors.
Despite the growing dissent, Biden’s campaign team remains confident in his candidacy. Campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon told MSNBC’s Morning Joe program that the president is more committed than ever to defeating Donald Trump.
“Absolutely the president’s in this race,” she affirmed, acknowledging some decline in support but maintaining that Biden is still the best candidate to secure a Democratic victory.
